Kuwait CSP tender tests efficiency gains in oil field steam generation
Solar Enhanced Oil Recovery has become a competitive technology for Middle East heavy oil producers looking to reduce on-site gas and oil consumption amid rising national power demand, industry experts told New Energy Update.
Kuwait is currently finalizing tender terms for a CSP steam production plant at a heavy crude oilfield operated by the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). The state-owned operator plans to use solar steam for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) to reduce natural gas consumption and free up domestic hydrocarbon resources for export, a strategy already deployed in nearby Oman.
Kuwait is among a number of Gulf countries which rely on costly liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports or diesel to power oil production as well as domestic power generation.
